Distribution

The boar lives in the woods of central and southern Europe, in vast areas of Asia and north-western Africa.

In Italy it is absent in the north and in Sicily, while it is widespread in the woods of the center and south of the peninsula. It is very present in Tuscany, where the Maremma wild boar (Sus scrofa major) is widespread.

In Campania it is present in the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park.

Habitat

Thanks to its body structure and the thick skin that protects it, the wild boar can penetrate the denser spots where other animals could not pass.

Strongly hunted for always for its tasty meat, wild boar came to the beginning of the 1900s on the verge of extinction, but over the last century, also for sporting purposes, it was reintroduced in many regions, with imports of breeds larger and more prolific, and protected by severe hunting rules. Currently there are real reserves where the number of foldable garments is established annually.

Supply

It is a sociable animal that lives in flocks made up of females and children, adult males instead are solitary, sheltering in the woods during the day, while at dusk they go in search of food.

Of an omnivorous diet, he digs with the snout in the ground in search of spasmodic roots, tubers, acorns, insects and their larvae and earthworms, an activity harmful to agriculture but, on the contrary, very useful in wooded areas where it favors the distribution of seeds and rotation of the forest heritage. The wild boar diet is supplemented by bird eggs and small mammals.

The flock usually, after eating, go to a pond or a puddle where all the components roll around in the mud for a long time to get rid of the parasites.

Playback

The young grow quickly and after just 15 days they begin to feed looking for food in the soil; their skin is covered by a tawny fur with yellowish longitudinal lines, suitable for camouflage between the bush, which at six months changes into a reddish livery. At one year the last moult gives rise to brown leather. On average, a boar lives up to twenty years.
